Brief

This research-through-art project took a collaborative approach to the climate crisis as a narrative. A series of public pop-up workshops asked people to engage with their fears and dreams of the future. Through a series of prompts, participants shared their narratives in the form of sketches and conversation.

Sehnsucht

The german noun 'Sehnsucht' captures a complicated response to living in a world that feels like it's on the precipace of disintegrating and, simultaneously, nearing the horizon of a radical breakthrough into a new and humane future.

01.
Workshops

In July 2022, a series of public workshops were held at Treptower Park, Berlin. During the workshops, members of the public were invited to take part in the above activity. A sketch prompt format guides a discussion about individual fears and hopes for the future. Individuals were also invited to say a few words about their responses.

The workshop format was developed and tested amongst the CODE University community. Initially, the prompts were quite specific and focused on issues of sustainability. However, drawn out through testing were more open-ended prompts. The idea here being to focus on the more personal and emotion experience of Sehnsucht.

02.
Interviews

This collaborative semester project focused on gaining competency in Design Methodology. This required each student investigate a research question through the use of one primary research method. Methods were investigated for their advantages and disadvantages, with narrative interviews ultimately selected as an appropriate fit for the topic and scope. Each team member created their own set of interview questions, which were collated and distributed to researchers for conducting interviews.

Contributors shared their thoughts on issues of sustainability through the lens of futures thinking.

An ongoing research-through-art project about futures thinking & co-creation. The word 'Sehnsucht' captures a complicated response to living in a world that feels like it’s on the precipice of disintegrating and, simultaneously, nearing the horizon of a radical breakthrough into a new and humane future.

Problem

The narrative of climate change portrayed by western media emphasizes large-scale problems and their looming impacts while shifting the blame on individuals. This narrative is demotivating and contributes to "eco-anxiety", experienced by 46% of surveyed people around the world.

Approach

A participative method was used, wherein pop-up workshops asked members of the public to sketch their thoughts about a variety of prompts. All responses then clustered and combined by topic, turning the drawings into animated sketches.

In addition, interviews were conducted with educators & industry partners involved within sustainable development. These interviews add a layer of information, amplifying the ideas found in the new (participative) narrative and showcased at the exhibition.

Showcase. Factory Berlin graciously offered their XR room to showcase this project, which combines an array of projectors and a true surround sound system to create a 360° XR environment. A custom setup was created using Touchdesigner over a ______ in under two weeks time.
